FAQs
Do I need a license to shoot?
Yes. Prior to coming to the gun range, please ensure you have a current firearms license and have the physical card to be allowed to shoot on the premises. If you are a member of another ACTA club you are more than welcome to shoot here given you have your ACTA number on hand. We cannot sell any ammunition to unlicensed shooters.
How much does it cost to shoot?
You pay for your targets per round of 25. We usually have a couple of extra targets there in case of broken targets. For a full adult member of WVCTC the cost is $12, regardless of discipline. For non member adults it is $14.
Non members also include members of the ACTA who are not associate members of WVCTC.
For junior members it is reduced to $8. Veteran Members (65+) have the price brought down to $10 for members and non members respectively. This is for the targets. Ammunition ranges from around $10 to $20 per round depending on how ammunition used and how many shots are taken at any given target. This usually ends up averaging to around $12 in ammunition per round.
What disciplines are on offer?
We have trap, 5 stand sporting, skeet and ISSF trap on offer at all times. On occasion we will set the traps to throw universal trap or double rise as well. You can see them all on show in our disciplines page.
How does the ACTA and WVCTC work? What is a membership actually for?
The WVCTC (Werribee Victorian Clay Target Club) is an affiliate club of the ACTA (Australia Clay Target Association). Any of the membership options other than ‘practice at Werribee only‘ makes you a member of the ACTA. The ACTA is an overarching association of which, a number of gun club are affiliates for. This means that while you are a member of WVCTC you are also able to shoot at, for example, Frankston gun club using your ACTA membership. The ACTA basically allows you to get more for your membership, as many clubs are a part of it.
Do you sell ammunition?
Yes we do! Call the club ahead of time to check what ammunition we have on offer. Members get a special discount as part of their membership. We usually stock a number of different brands, ranging in shot size from 7.5-9 and between 24 and 32 grams. All ammunition sales require the presentation of a valid firearms licence.
Do you do rifle or pistol shooting?
Sadly not. However, our neighbours do. The Werribee International Shooting Complex Incorporated (WISCI) where we are located has an operating rifle and pistol range. Your membership here does not include the use of their ranges as they are separate businesses. See their websites for more information on them.
I am a member of an ACTA affiliated club, can I shoot on your grounds?
Of course! If you are a full ACTA member of their club you are permitted to both practice and compete at WVCTC. The price of practice and ammunition is slightly higher than that of WVCTC specific members, however an associate membership for our club decreases those prices and the saving quickly covers the cost. If you are a recreational ACTA member (non-competing) you are welcome to practice at our club, but are not able to compete on competition days. The pricing structure is the same as other ACTA members.
Do you serve food and drinks?
We have a fully stocked bar with soft drink, alcohol, chips and chocolates open all day. On competition days and nights we also have a canteen in full operation to serve all the hungry competitors.
Is shooting safe?
Very. The process to get a licence and then to become a member is very thorough with a firearm safety course and a safety induction run at these stages. We constantly monitor shooters to make sure that they are operating in a safe manner. It is important that every member is aware of the rulebook that also describes the safest way to shoot to avoid any possible unsafe acts. Anybody acting in an unsafe manner will be disciplined immediately as such.
How much does a membership cost?
There are a number of membership options that can be found on our membership form here. Their associated prices are listed on the same page. The most popular and universal option is the ‘Full ACTA Member‘. This allows you to shoot at any ACTA club in Australia. Insures you and your belonging while on ACTA grounds and allows you to compete in any of the many ACTA competitions run all over the country.
If this is your first time joining the ACTA you might want to go for the ‘New Start‘ membership option. This allows you to shoot practice at any ACTA club but also allows you to shoot competition at WVCTC for one year. This saves you a little bit of money while letting you dip your toes into the competitive side of the sport. You can only do this for your first year as a member.
When are your competitions?
Generally, we run our night competition on the first Friday night of each month. We also run two down the line competitions on the second and fourth Sunday of each month. On top of that, we run a trench competition on the second Sunday alongside the down the line competition. While these are our general rules for competitions, be sure to check the club’s Facebook page and our shoot programs for the month as we occasionally change these and run special events.
How do I get a firearm licence?
We can help you with some of the steps required to get your longarm firearm licence. To do so you need to complete a firearm safety course and have a valid reason to hold a licence. Being a member of a club is a valid reason and we can help you organise a membership. The firearm safety course is another thing we can help you with. A wonderful group of instructors run them on a Monday night at the clubhouse. You can reach Rob; one of the instructors, by phone on 0427601588
I am a recreational member, can I shoot ‘birds only‘ on a competition day?
This is up to the discretion of the shoot marshall on the shoot day. Generally, the answer is no. We tend to get a large number of shooters and simply do not have the time to have non-competitors shooting alongside them. You are welcome to come in on any non-competition day to practice, or to come down and socialise.
Can I book a layout for use for a day?
As we have a limited number of layouts, we do not allow people to book out a layout for that day. This is the fairest method and stops members from being disappointed when they come out, finding no layouts available.
Can I bring my kids?
Of course! We are a family club, and encourage you to bring anyone who might be interested in shooting. Just make sure that they understand the importance of gun safety. You take responsibility for their safety while shooting, so make sure that they know what is safe and what is not. If they are twelve or older you are able to supervise them shooting as well, but there are some restrictions to this. Talk to our team on how this works. You will need to sign them in before they are able to shoot.
Do you run corporate events?
No we do not, but if you are looking to book one, the team at Go Shooting can help you. They operate out at the club and are perfect for it. They do birthdays, corporate events and much more! You can find them here or under the additional resources tab.
